Review of My Vitriol at the Queen Margaret Union, Glasgow
It was testament to how much this band has seen and learned in the
past year that they remained totally cool and composed as a fire
left the Univerisity of Glasgow science block in ashes on the morning
of their Queen Margaret Union gig. Over the past year My Vitriol
have been touring, released their debut album Finelines and have
done nothing but "gigs, gigs and more gigs" according to drummer
Ravi Kesavaram.
The band has been touring almost constantly since they were singed
at the end of 1999 and it should be stated that they were signed
after playing just ten gigs together. Bassist Carolyn Bannister
explained "We've done just about every festival going now, except
the ones with hurricanes at them. We tend to bring the black clouds
with us, so sorry Glasgow". We finally know who to blame the weather
on and it ain't Fran Healy. "It has been pretty hard, but you get
used to it. After we finish this tour we have another one in November
and after that we only have about four days off, but it's good for
the band". Explained guitarist Seth Taylor. After that it's across
the Atlantic to the States and another tour. However this is one
that Ravi is really up for. "I'm really looking forward to it. I've
never been to the States, although I know a few people who have
visited there and they say it's a great place. It's been really
interesting because we've vistited fourteen countries within two
months. We've also done a lot of Europe dates with Placebo so now
we're looking forward to the USA".
So what do you expect at a My Vitriol gig? "Very fast and loud with
a lot of bright flashes". Ravi explained and he wasn't lying. After
some support from the excellent Seafood, My Vitriol burst onto stage
with an explosion of sound and light. With all levels set at eleven
and enough lighting to guide a jumbo jet home. After the two relatively
easy to listen to singles (Always Your Way and Grounded) My Vitriol
continued to show their heavier side of their music in their live
performances (the audience mainly made up of a heavy percentage
of metal fans). After a set which lasted approximately an hour and
included the afore mentioned singles plus other favourites from
Finelines, My Vitriol left to a huge standing ovation and after
one more month of touring they'll finally get their well deserved
four day rest.

Gig Review of 911 at the Pavillion Theatre, Glasgow
Say the numbers 911 nowadays and the first thing you
will probably think of is the American emergency serivices, unless
of course you were one of the many teenage fans of hearthrobs Jimmy
Constable, Lee Brennan and Spike Dawbarn (yum, yum, yum!) - Glasgow's
very own adopted boy band 911. After a string of successful hit records
throughout the nineteen-nineties including Don't Make Me Wait, Party
People (Friday Night) and Private Number, the band called it a day
in 1999.
Fortunately for their many fans, November 2001 saw the boys joining
forces to do a tour of Britain and their Glasgow fans certainly weren't
dissapointed as this tasty trio played the Pavillion Theatre filled
to it's capacity.
The crowd gave a good reception to up and coming boy/girl duo 'Clear'
however it wasn't long before the chant went up for 911. Kicking off
their set to a background of defening screams, the boys performed
as if they had never been away. With Lee taking lead vocals, former
'Hit Man and Her' dancers Jimmy and Spike wowed their female fans
with their slick and polished dance moves.
Lee made way for Jimmy to sing two ballads which left the crowd screaming
for more and throwing various items of undergarments onto the stage!
Spike performed an energetic break-dancing solo to a by now ecstatic
crowd. Now it was Lee's turn to give the audience a taste of his forthcoming
single 'Turn It Around' due for release in January 2002.
Having delighted the crowd with all their hits including Swing, Don't
Make Me Wait, The Day We Find Love, Party People (Friday Night) and
Night To Remember the boys concluded their set with the fabulous BodyShakin
to a standing ovation.
If the reception from Glasgow fans is anything to go by perhaps Lee
should put his solo career on hold for the moment and Jimmy and Spike
should give up their day jobs - KEEP THE GIRLS HAPPY AND MAKE THIS
YOUR COMEBACK 911!!! |
